This my be a stupid question but here it goes.....do outboard engines need to be winterized?

Yes. 2 and 4 strokes should be winterized/fogged.

A lot of people do nothing. However, outboards self drain the water everytime you pull out of the water. I fog the engine through the intake if possible or pull the plugs and spray into the cylinders and roll the engine without starting it. Also to make sure all the water is out of the block I would tilt the engine down for a few minutes. Change the lower unit oil.

I use my boat year round (when I'm not building another) so I generally don't winterize my boat until the water is frozen and I cannot get the boat off of the lift!!

Then I fog the outboards to coat the cylinder walls and also stabilize the fuel. Usually Late December or early February to April.

Don't know if this would apply to four strokes or if they hold any water in the block or other parts. I have never had any problems with 2 strokes.
