I have a Northstar 550i and have the set the speed unit to be kilometres/hour and it handles 3 digits without any problems.

Good question, I don't know. It will not help in my application as my boat goes well over 115.

I have ordered a Garmin 4008. It has an unlimited speed limit or 999.9 and should fill the hole nicely.

I agree. Based on Northstar's attitude, corporately I don't think they think they are in the performance boat market. Well that is my impression from Bill the tech guy I talked to at Northstar.
