Both of those are the pits as far as I'm concerned. Since you are going up empty, that would let you decide if you wanted to come back that way as you would know what you are up against.

It's funny that you posted your reply saying I should go up the way that is mapped....
My wife just said...."I wanna go thru the mountains!!!!"....
So, I guess we are at least going that way up there....Then I'll just buy her some damn post cards that she can look at on the way back.....LOL....
The things we do for our wives....Oh yeah, I guess that is Valentines Day that I'm getting the boat on....So, I guess I better get some flowers & candy to go with those post cards....:D

I have towed through there. About 3 or 4 times. But it is just a boring ride. Nothing to look at on the way.

Rick, what are you towing with? I am assuming that's a 26 Sonic? If so, you are probably around 7500 lbs. on a trailer full of fuel total load, maybe a little less before you put all of your gear in it. (Mine was 7280 lbs. fully loaded.)

What are you towing with? If you've got a diesel, you will be fine with that load. If you've got a gas motor, you're gong to give you transmission a work out; as I-81 does have mountains and hills, and is full of trucks. BUT, its way better than I-95 by a long shot depending on what time of day you are going to be on I-95.

You do not want to be on I-95 ANYWHERE between Fredericksburg, VA and Baltimore, MD between the hours of 5:30AM - 9:30AM and 3PM and 6:30PM. The traffic is horrendous, and I'd rather be dealing with I-81.

Give me a shout if I can be of assistance. I have spent way too much of my life on I-95, and a fair amount on I-81 as well.

Yes, it's the 26 Sonic...Towing with an F250, 7.3L.
Hopefully, if all goes well with the transaction....all planets are perfectly in alignment....:D....We hope to be back on the road & heading South by 3pm on Thurs.
I didn't realize that traffic was that bad, I may have to re-look at things. How far from DC will I be? Is that where the traffic will be coming from?
I wonder if it would be worth it to grab a hotel for Thurs nite....hey that'll be "V"-Day....I may even get lucky :D.....
Then just get up early on Friday & head South.....

With only 7500 lbs. behind a 7.3PSD, you will have no problems on I-81 all the way toward I-70 and take 70 straight East to Baltimore.

There will be an afternoon rush getting out of Baltimore heading south down I-95, but its not bad. However, the I-495 Beltway around DC and I-95 South of DC is horrible on the afternoon rush hour.

There will be some traffic on I-70 West out of Baltimore for the afternoon rush hour, but not too bad. Baltimore's afternoon rush hour starts a little later than DC's (business and medical town vs. a gov't town).

I-95 is a very delicate road. One little fender bender, and your in a backup for 10-20 miles. I-81 is just as delicate, but much less likely to happen.

I use "pc miler practical open" for commercial reasons and is pretty close on the miles. If you run up 81 vs 65-85-95 etc its apprx 100 miles more. Stay on the flat road on the way back and as Brian said above try and time your route to avoid rush hour.
An alternative around DC is rte 301. A few lights and posted speed limits but not too bad.
