I've never deliberately run one dry to test it. They last really well and they have fitments for all sorts of impeller pumps- not just boats. It's some large company that manufactures them, not some guy in his garage.

Is it fair to assume that a 'run dry' impeller doesn't seal quite as well as a standard Mercury impeller & that's why it doesn't burn itself to shreds without water present? Is it a 3M miracle rubber compound? I find it hard to believe that Merc wouldn't use the same technology & offer it as standard equipment if it performed as well as their OEM impeller with the benefit of taking additional abuse. Does anyone know the facts?

Be sure you do the research before purchasing. This has been covered a few times on OSO.
They will make your engine(s) run 10-15 degrees warmer. They are made of silicone and not rubber. The veins are not a stiff as rubber, and hence do not move as much water. Expect any after SWP water pressure gauges AND accessories to receive less pressure and obviously less water.

I used them, but still replaced them every year, and still carried a spare on the boat at all times. It seemed to me it did not seal the same as a stock unit when in the pump housing.
