Apparently the barge has been anchored out there as part of a dredging operation.

Boat Accident on Lake St. Clair Kills 2

Scott Ryan Reporting

Harrison Township (WWJ) -- Tragedy on Lake St. Clair, as two people were killed, a third seriously hurt, in a boating accident Saturday night.

Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel told WWJ in a live interview that the boat, with six people on it, struck a barge in the water near Harrison Township around 11 p.m. Saturday. "The operator, who was severely injured, was able to at least maintain his composure and was able to radio to us via ship-to-shore radio that he had a mayday. When our officers recognized what was going on they headed out to that area.and found quite a difficult scene."

Hackel said the barge was more than three times the size of the 37-foot boat. Hackel says the barge had been there all winter; its owner had just put lighting on it last week so boaters would be aware of its presence.

"This has been there throughout the winter months, and we were somewhat concerned about it. We made contact with the people that owned it about having it lit up at least. We know that the day prior to (Saturday), they put some lighting on it. It was definitely something out there that could be difficult to see, but for the most part it did have lighting on it," said Hackel.

They are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors. The four other people on the boat were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

According to the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents, there were 35 fatalities on Michigan waters last year, the most since 38 lost their lives in 2002. However, the number of boating accidents dropped last year, as did the number of people injured.

Alcohol remains a major concern, with all but seven of last year's fatalities related to drinking.

Not to be insensitive, but totally avoidable. I could not believe the number of boats running wide open after dark when I lived on Lake St. Clair.

I can't believe we continue to have discussions on this board about the use of alcohol on board- and typically we have a positive tilt towards its use.
