XR Drive maxium HP
I posted this on the drive forum but havent got any feed back.I recently installed a new XR drive and am currently running about 625+ HP. I am looking to rebulid & increase the HP this coming winter and was wondering the Maximun HP I can build the motor to with the XR drive and still retain reilability.

Yes, Merc rates it at 600. I know of at least 5 drives coupled to Merc 575's that have come apart on Skaters and Cigarettes. I also know a couple guys with whippled 500's/525's that have had XR's grenade on them. I even worry about my XR with my 525, so I have a spare in the garage. As one drive expert told me..."it's not if your gonna blow a drive, it's when..."

It's all in how you drive it and service it. I did a 28 Nordic last season with a 598 ci with a 3.3 Whipple efi making 1028 hp. It probably has over 70 hrs on it now. Has not missed a beat.
I do quite a few upgrades to the XR's to help them live. It really all depends on how you drive it. If you try to drag race it or unload the prop and stay on the gas, you will break it. If you drive it like that, you could break it with less than 600 hp.
The other thing is service. You can't change the oil enough. It needs to be changed every 10 hrs or less. If you do these few things, you should have pretty good luck with an upgraded XR.

What I've found is that no single company makes the best parts for all situations. I use parts from about 5 different companys. I replace the upper and lower vertical shaft, propshaft, bearing carrier, top cap and bearings. The best parts in the world won't help if it is not assembled correctly. I treat a drive as if it was an engine. Everything must be cleaned, de-burred, and carefully assembled. It is time consuming and a pain since you may have to take it apart and put it together several times to get the rolling torque and backlash correct.
