What lens were you using. I rented a 100-400mm Canon L for the Outlaw Challenge down here in Houston and was a bit dissapointed. I have a Canon XTi body.

I was using a Sigma 120-300 f2.8, with a 2.0 teleconverter, on a Canon 1D. most pics were in the 250 to 350 range.
I picked up the boats in the 600 range and adjusted as neccesary. shooting at 10 FPS helps as well.
