Coast Guard gives up search for missing boater after

high speed hit on sandbar

SOLOMON'S ISLAND (Oct. 13, 2008) UPDATE --- The Coast Guard announced it has suspended its search for a missing man in the Patuxent River after a boating accident Sunday. The Maryland Natural Resources Police and Calvert County rescue craft continue to drag the river for the body of the missing boater.
Four people were ejected from a 35-foot cigarette boat after reportedly striking a sand bar in the vicinity of Point Patience.

Point Patience is a sandbar which juts out in the Patuxent River from Calvert County and is well marked by a buoy which is lit as well as numerous fishing boats at most times of the day which flock to the area for the currents which bring fish. All charts of the river show the sandbar and it is located just north of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. On the land, hitting this sandbar is the equivalent of driving off of the road and running into a barn. The operator of this vessel could be charged with manslaughter and if intoxicated, manslaughter while intoxicated. It is not known at this time if alcohol played a role in this crash or if it was just stupidity.

Cigarette boats can cost upwards of $200,000 while charts are about $25. Most pricey vessels have computerized GPS navigational aids which the captain can use to guide their way without hitting sandbars.

The Coast Guard reports that Ron Healy, a boater that was in the area at the time, recovered three of the people from the water and transferred them to awaiting emergency services.

Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes, Md., Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., the Natural Resource Police, Calvert County divers and Prince Fredrick County Fire and Rescue are currently searching for the remaining man.

Persons recovered were taken to Prince George Shock Trauma and Calvert County Memorial Hospital.

The driver did NOT hit a sandbar. A wave was hit during a turn that caused the boat to roll over, ejecting those on board.

Second, the weather was perfect yesterday without stormy weather or winds present to generate a "wave" big enough to cause trouble for a boat.
