While MMI graduates might be highered on the spot by some facilities, in general you'll discover that most (not all), but most of the graduates are worthless and have no real mechanical ability. Good grades don't equate into mechanical ability or aptitude, and of much more importance an understanding of marine design & engineering.

I have been in the business off and on since 1989. I am a graduate of MMI. I feel that I wasted my money $22,000.00. What you get is a graduation certificate and certificates for the classes you took. But in actuality you get NO factory certifications. You are still a rookie mechanic and you must still go through many more hours of dealer sponsored training to actually reach the level to take either of the Mercury certified tests. This fact was hidden from me upon my initial registration and was never answered properly during my time there. I had to find out the hard way. Don't make the same mistake, the training is adequate for someone going in with no knowledge of this industry what-so-ever. I was bored out of my mind as most of the information they present was review.

25k will egt you an RN, not the most glamorous job, but you will always be able to find a job anywhere for decent pay..12 hour shifts, 3 or 4 days a week. traveling positions available with housing allotments, spend some time in the great lakes, then florida then so cal etc...

My wife is an RN, she can get a job anywhere. With her certs she brings home about 1200 a week and GREAT benefits. Makes my life a Hell of alot easier, for sure !!

Thats what I don't like, No certification for 25k. Plus housing.
Im afraid that alot of it will be a review since I have worked on alot of boats and mine already, doing many different things. Like you said I can see if someone is going in with no experience.
Maybe I should just try getting a job at a local shop.

4 day work weeks would be great and job security will always be there. Just not sure I would like the field. Im sure I would like working with the nurses though.
People always say do something you like and its not work. Although if you talk to a marine mechanic that works everyday is probably sick of it and calls it work.

Trippin, As I mentioned earlier, one of our service techs went to MMI and we were all aware of the fact that he was not returning Merc or Yam certified. However, a few e skills test and some classes and the certification was not unattainable. In this techs situation it was much cheeper than a 4 year college as he had no idea what he wanted to do. He left our dealership as a boat washer/rigger and came back to be one of my best go to guys when I need anything from work on a 300 Vearado or a HP700sci serviced! Just my .02!

Go to school and get a degree in the IT feild. Most everything is computer related now days and there is a shortage of good IT guy's. I get calls all the time with job offers. Also get alot of side jobs that pay for my boating habit.

Kid that lives across the street from me is down at MMI right now. Give me a couple months, and I'll let you know how it works out when he's done. :drink:
