2.5 Question, Part out, Repair, Sell as is.....
This weekend I ened up sticking the number 6 cyclinder (I think, lower right piston) on one of my 280's. I still don't know why, but I am looking into it. The sleeve is junk and so is the piston. The rest of the enigne looks good.
Specs are:
1998 2.5 ROS 280's about 140 hours on them.
Starboard engine runs great (could use new rings and top pinned pistons), rebuilt lower 4 hours ago, 1.87 gear ratio.
Port engine needs rebuild (#6 cyclinder dead), rebuilt LH lower 4 hours ago, 1.87 gear ratio. There are no holes in the block and everything seems in place.
I am debating on what is the smartest thing to do from here. Within the next year I will be re-rigging the boat with new engines
Should I rebuild the engines and try to sell them as a set, sell them as is along with everything needed to rig a boat with 2.5's (fuel pumps, ect) or just part out the engines?
If these engines were in perfect condition (fresh rebuild), what is the going rate for a pair of 2.5 ROS's?
Sorry for some many questions but I have no idea what I should do.

The thing is with as much time as you have on those motors, they probably really need rods too. Your going to end up with around 3,000 in parts.....if you DON'T put rods in it.

I would think Ryan's estimate of value is for two "fresh" running engines. 140 hours is a lot on a 2.5. $3-5k to rebuild an engine with damage like that. Been there done that with at least 10-12 engines blown over the years. I still love those 2.5's though. Just bought a 24 Daytona with a pair.

I agree with you about Ryan's estimate they must be completely rebuilt to pull that kind of coin. Would it be better to sell them as is for a discounted price or rebuild them and sell them? I would believe that most people that are looking for this kind of engine would rather rebuild them themselevse so they know what has been done to them...... Just my thought.
