I'm not so sure on that, I saw this done on a boat a number of years back. Was shipped, sent back for "work/changes/corrections", returned, and was a year newer. After all it spent it's first year F'upped, so fair is fair, right? We can fix that for you!!!

I have seen it done as well however it's still illegal. I know a few guys who have redone some old Bertram 31's all the way down to bare hulls. completely redone from the hull up. When they are done they are better than new no wood all foam stringers. They are still 1969 boats no matter what you do.

The only way you can change the number is if it was incorrect to begin with and the new number will go above or below the incorrect number so both show this is on the boat stamp itself the other is if you have to change the hull on a boat for some reason but why would you just change the hull unless it was an insurance repair and again I think the original number has to remain attached somehow

All in all it is unethical to not disclose something like that to a buyer and if it was outright changed it is illegal.....

Someone I know had a 1980 boat and was somehow able to get a new hull # in 1987 as an xxxxx87 hull number. I have no idea how he pulled it off. It was repossessed for non payment of storage, rebuilt after a sinking, newer engine and the new hull #.

That is how I've heard it described as well. If more that a certain percentage of the boat was damaged then it can be listed with a new number when rebuilt. Maybe its a scam but I can think of three boats that were done this way (all from different places).
Either way everything SHOULD be disclosed...but rarely does that happen.
