Newport Beach 6/28 water conditions/SCOPE boats
 

I went to Newport this Sunday (around 1:30)and ther were 6' (?) swells in the ocean. I had my 13 year old step son and a couple of friends with me so we just went up to the Newport Pier and back (a few miles) and returned to the harbor since it was so rough. After loading the boat up I saw a couple of Formulas loading up ( I was eating dinner in the restraunt next to the launch ramp). One was a SCOPE members boat Turbosonic and the other was Fossil Fuel. I saw on the SCOPE board that they were running to Catalina. I couldn't imagine going that far in that kind of water. How was it? I would think it would take away from the enjoyment, all the beating. Or is it smoother further out from land? (Note: I have a 38' Scarab- so not a small boat either). Just curiouse-thanks Mike

I was not out there this weekend so don't know how it was but it does not really get any smoother farther out. And it can get really rough in the afternoon.

I saw your boat on Elsinore a while ago, I think the weekend before Desert Storm. I was in my 29 Outlaw (blue sides with "Cool-Roofing" company logo on sides. Are you on there often? You have a very nice looking boat.

I think I'm going out next weekend in the big blue.

I saw your boat in Elsinore that weekend and then again in Havasu a week later at London Bridge in their slip.

Ive been caught in that crap in my little 30 footer and it was not fun.. had 8 passengers who got all bruised up.. we went to catalina all excited partied and had a great time to thinking we were going to have to get rescued on our way back late in the evening. Learned A LOT from that trip.

I ran from Huntington Beach to Newport, then down to Laguna area on Saturday. My wife and I headed back up the coast at around 4pm and it was nasty. I'd say solid 3-5 footers the entire way, lots of wind waves....basically like a washing machine. Not fun, but nothing to worry about in a Cigarette.

Does Lu Lyall or the guy who owns the "Fossile Fuel" Formula happen to be here on OSO? I was wondering if ou guys could comment. Also I heard that the waves were 8'-8.5' Sunday. My Matco tool rep said his friend went to Catalina in a 31' Scarab Sunday.

They both are on here.....I just emailed Lu to see if he will respond. If it was big and nasty.....no prob for a Formula, but certainly too big for a Cigarette though. :D

I got caught in that sh!t coming back from Catalina about 10 years ago in my old 24' Baja. Trying to get back to Marina Del Rey, came to the tip of the island and the waves started coming over the bow. Turned around and stayed another night.

Your Scarab will handle 6's no problem. I've been in 6+ swells in a 38 Scarab (going to Catalina) before. Couldn't see anything but walls of water when in the the troff of the swell. Handled great and showed up dry, when others were wet.


Nort, don't be jelious because you bought the wrong boat that falls apart any time it's in 3' or bigger swell!:eek::drink:
