I agree however this was a gun show where old old guns are brought to and in this case someone who had an old gun knew nothing about it including opening the breech to check to see if it was loaded or not. As a result the gun owner brought it to the show to have the experts who were waiting at the door do the safety check and to secure. Now, being cocky and wearing a badge checking in guns turned what should have been a safe event into a gun shot. The man handling the gun and no doubt pointing the muzzle in the wrong direction when the gun went off is to blame.

This is the most stupid response ever on OSO!!! I don't think you would be saying that if you or a loved one was hit or killed by that stray round!!! Imagine if you got hit in the spine and were paralized from the neck down. What would your reponse be??? "It's OK, nobody is perfect"
This is exactly why gun control was invented.
Carrying around a bag of guns like a sack of potatoes IS criminal!!
Good luck with the lawsuit!

The guns were antiques. They were kept in a locked duffle bag- like an old money bag. Each gun was in it's own leather and sheepskin case. They had initials and names burned into the leather. I don't know where you read they were carried around like a bag of potatos.
You guys make it sound like I was twirling the gun on my finger.
I did exactly as I should have. i handed the gun in the case to a police officer to inspect it.
Under the circumstances, what should i have done?

You meant to say that you wouldn't jump in an Mti at the dock. Pushing the trottles would be like taking out and pointing the gun with your finder pressed on the trigger...
Come-on this is a poor, very poor example. It would have to be that a unexperienced man buys a Mti and is at the dock and an experienced racer about to retire lets just say Ritchie Powers gets in and says let's check the steering to make sure that you hurt no one at the docks here before you leave becuase I am part of a safety inspection and thats what I'm here for and pushes the throttle down to 160Mph and come to find out the steering wasen't right and an accident happen. You are saying to fault who? The owner?? Good luck convincing a jury on that one.

Unbelievable. If you do not know how to clear a weapon, you have no business picking it up....much less transporting it and carrying it to a gun show. The cop screwed up for sure but you are going to have liability in this as well. I am "blown away" that you would post all of this in a public forum with upcoming litigation. Thank god nothing worse happened. People that do not know how to handle weapons under thier control endanger everyone around them. I am not knocking you for not knowing how to operate a certain type of weapon, but you execised poor judgement by handling, transporting, and carrying a loaded weapon into a public place with signs plastered all over the walls "NO LOADED FIREARMS".
As for poor judgement, I brought secured, antique guns, to get inspected by police officer that is there for exactly that reason. The miserable old cop did not do his job or use any common sense causing a several people to get hurt. Thank god not seriously. Don't point your finder at me like i went in and started pointing a gun at people and it went off.

Don't they have to give that one back to you after the trial?
I think you did the right thing. It's a shame that because some a$$hole hates his job and life that bad that people had to be hurt. Goodluck with everything, i hope that cop gets what he deserves.
And for the perfect people on here,
I own over 40 guns so i am a "gun guy".
