exhaust question - Y pipes

Hey everyone, I noticed that years ago everyone was using a Y-style exhaust pipe on their offshore powerboats and now most are not. What are the pro's and con's to this type of exhaust. I prefer the sound of the Y - Pipe. Thanks
Dr. Gary

I have a set of Stainless Marine Y pipes sitting in my shop.

Looking at the possibility of using a custom set, not merc style -- these would be for a high hp application, straight out the back -- dry. Is there a reason to stay away from this layout?

I think that is an excellent question, I too would like to know. I was once told that the Y-Pipes were effective in the SBC (small blocks), that ran at 7000+ rpms, and hence helped to make the optimum in horsepower in that application, I am not sure why that would be but someone once told me that. Dry pipes straight out of the back of the boat would seem a no brainer to me to make optimum horsepower. Maybe once of engine guys can give us a data/tested real world answer to this question.

Great question. I just like the look of the Y tailpipe myself.
