Painting Outdrives

I have 3 Bravo One outdrives. The paint is peeling on two of the drives but the third is fine. All three have the same drive shower installed.

Has anyone tried Imron or powdercoating? Should I use the merc paint or will it just peel off again? How should I prep the metal?

Thanks!

You may want to go over to the technical section and do a search - this topic has been discussed several times before.

I used Imron on two drives. It takes some elbo grease as in sanding but they look like new. I sand blasted them since the first try pealed due to the under paint. Use a good etching primer so it eats into the under paint. It is a very strong paint.

Hey Stevel,
We charge $300.00 per drive to repaint your Bravo I to better than new condition. It's really no the paint it is the preperation before the painting that makes the paint last on the drive.

If you sand them to bare aluminum, you have to use a zinc oxide primer. It's the green stuff.
It is sold in any of the boat stores in a spray can.
Use several coats then lightly sand.
Paint with the Merc Phantom Black.
I never had problems when used with the right primer.
The paint will peel if you dont scuff it well before painting!

Thanks for the advice guys. It seems that only the outer paint is peeling. It has not gone down to the aluminum yet and there is no corrosion (one of the benifits of fresh water). I will fill the voids, sand well, primer, sand and then paint. We will see how long that lasts.

Thanks again!

Steve
