Fountain Question
I road in a 35 foot Fountain over the weekend with staggered 600's. I was impressed to say the least when the speedo touched the 100 MPH mark. However, I was also surprised as to the "chine walking" that was occurring. Can this "chine walk" be controlled with steering corrections (like an Allison or Hydrostream)? Trim tab settings?
Just curious. Thanks. Mike |
What speed did it occur? What was the water conditions?Sometimes you can drive thru it by rocking the steering slightly back and forth or putting the throttle down harder and accelerating thru it. Trim tabs is another way to do it, but you will scrub off some speed. It can be a prop issues also. I had it in my Sunsation at around 65 and just had to bump up the throttles.

My friend's 1998 35 doesn't chinewalk at all . Has twin 600SC
with blowershop blowers and standard engine placement. He has standoff boxes and the props turning inwards. |
This happened at ~ 95 MPH. Somebody on Scream and Fly mentioned that it was probably the driver. A Fountain drives like a "big Allison". I don't know if there's truth to that or not.

Mike We're running exactly 96 mph here according to the chopper pilot . Four of us in the boat , not a hint of chinewalk. http://www3.telus.net/spectrasonly/3...0SC%2097%20mph |
Had a 2000 35 Lightning, with Whippled 540's, I could make it chine walk if I over trimmed the boat. But trimming it correctly and keeping the k planes level with the bottom, it wouldnt move. Our 38 Fountain w/700's is the same way, rock solid at 114.

Was it a dealer demonstrating the boat? Sounds like the driver did not have the tabs and/or drives set correctly. That boat should run a lot faster than 100.

Side by side 525's here and sunday afternoon at 92 it was on a rail! My guess here is that driver did not, or does not, know how to set up the boat at speed. Many 35 Fountains have run well past the number you are talking and are on a rail at those speeds, both single step and twin step hull designs. I've been in some at well over 100 and it is a brain dead deal, assuming you know what you are doing.
