i was thinking that too, you see a lot of people taking those things off. also, nothing beats the sound of an old roots style blower

Here are some specs on the motors: they started as 502's then bored/stroked to 540's w/ 4.25 cranks, 9.5/1 compression w/ iron heads.......I have heuber trannys and #4's so im not really worried about blowin drives....

Not even remotely-

Look at this as a "loose guide"

Oh you can do it, you wont get 20 hours out of it.

supercharged engines require dedicated components to live.

I agree with Young performance. I am running a very similar setup making alot of power and doing just fine.

Aluminum heads are a must along with other changes, and then put a Whipple on it and you will be fine.

I have a pair of Merc 540 Bulldogs, 540 ci. Should i try and get blowers or just leave them alone. From what i have researched, they can handle it. Kinda conservative on this issue. What could i gain hp wise.

Bulldogs are a good candidates for blowers. Better have it set up by an expert though if you don't know what you're doing. They can eat an engine fast if set up wrong. See the "melted piston" thread in the tech section.

Agreed put a set of 3.3 whipples on it and good to go.

I installed a Whipple on my 565 , 9.5 comp engine a while back ,compression was a concern , but I didn't want to tear into the engine at that time ...I have kept the boost low , around 4.5 to 5 lbs and it runs great ! I do have aluminum heads though . Be conservative on your timing and monitor a knock sensor and you'll be good to go

Shallow Minded 10-30-2009 02:46 PM

Dumb question, but what's the advantage of using aluminum heads other than the obvious weight reduction? I've got Bulldogs, too...

The way I understand it, one of the advantages of
aluminium heads is that they will not hold the heat like iron heads do ,therefore this helps to prevent detonation.
