Don't even mention the word boat
In general what is the difference between a Merc 540 and 500, do both out put 500hp? is the block just bigger and heavier??

Gary Grimes in Atlanta said.........

He can pull an easy 600hp out of these motors on the dyno. He said they are slightly under rated in hp and detuned. This would be at the crank and not the prop. The block is a tall deck the hp 500's are not. About 40 more cubic inches. The short block is ready for some serious hp as is. Sunsation 32 what did Gary tell you Mercury is selling these puppies for. I forgot what you told me. Other than it was totally reDICKulous. Welcome to Mercury world where your wallet get thinner by the second.

Bulldog 540 talldeck Vs. Hp 500

Thanks for all the photo's fella's.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but here
is my understanding between the 540 & 500.

I spoke with mercury racing tech. yesterday
and here is my understanding. They both make
500 horse , Hp 500 is a standard deck hight
and a standard 502 ci.

The Bulldog is a talldeck with 540 ci. detuned
to 500 horse. It is .400 thousands taller which gives you a longer stroke. 4.375 stoke I believe,
with longer stoke you make more torque. Just like a diesel engine, most of them are inline engines with long stroke. Thats were the torque is made and that is how you maintain power.

So the plus side is while they are both 500 horse
the 540 makes more torque which will help you push the bigger props. Sad part is mercury only publishes horse power numbers not torque. And in the boating world torque is what you need not horse.

The other plus side to the Bulldog 540 is it is way over built for 500 horse and that is what makes it so exspensive. Once you switch to a tall deck it doesn't have GM's crank etc.

Now it gets all the aftermarket goodies, but you are paying for the extra big time for the big rotating assembly.

Plus side is if you ever decide to put a blower on it you can make some serious power 800hp +.

Correct me if I'm wrong, just my understanding.

I hope I was of some help.
