Steering Problem...help diagnose please

Here's the situation...

Power Steering Pump keeps overheating and puking the fluid.
If the pump is under load (like when steering the boat)...it operates fine.
This overheating situation only occurs when the pump is NOT under load (going straight)...it over-heats.

I don't have much more info that that. What would you do for troubleshooting? The system has been bled and there (at this point) should not be any air in the lines and the fluid is very fresh...since it's puked out all the old fluid that was God only knows how old.

Its pushing a TRS drive...if that matters at all.

Is the fluid red or pink, you might be getting some water in there.

No idea what could be causing the problem.Do you have a PS/Oil cooler?

Did you get the boat from Jeff yet?

I had a similar problem there was a small crack in one of the fittings outside under the ITS box. So I never saw any oil leaking but it did suck in air and the reservoir would puke.

No - didn't get it yet. This issue came up and he's working on troubleshooting it. It's a b-tch to figure out.

Yes it has a cooler/exchanger, and he's going to bypass that today to see if it's clogging the system. Also going to work on bleeding it some more just in case there is still an air bubble or 2 trapped in the system.

Does a shop have any way of troubleshooting this or is it all just going to be trial/error? Can the system be pressure/leak tested or something?
