Default 502 mpi vs 496 mag ho

Anyone know how performance compares - 502 mpi/415 hp vs 496 mag ho/425hp? Are they the same performance or does one have a slight edge over the other?

I have done several repowers over the years from 502mpi to 496ho pretty much run the some the 496 a little better, the 496 is a smoother running engine and have been holding up well, the exhaust system much better and doesn't have the reversion problem that the 502mpi seemed to have

Pat,
I repowered my 400SS last summer with this exact scenario and love the 496's over the 502's... The exhaust system that Dave mentioned and the engines being fresh water cooled are a plus for me... The 496 seem to run smoother with more mid range, I picked up maybe a 1MPH on top end, nothing noticeable really but they get there quicker... Better fuel economy also, cruising at 3600 RPM's with my 496's it is burning 14 gallons an hour compared to 17 GPH with my 502's...

This has been my experience, hope this helps...

Patrick

The 502s were good engines but it was the right time to cut my losses and go with newer fwc engines. The 496 mag hos should be reliable power for years to come.
