Who Tows with a Chevy 1500HD?
I just bought a 2002 GMC 1500HD 4x4 and figure it should tow my 29 fountain pretty easy. I just wondered who has one and what they tow with it and if anyone has had any problems.

Hey Dredgeking, congratulations on your new truck, good topic I'm looking at the same truck or a 2500 with a diesel. It should be an easy tow with your new truck,. I towed your boat from North Carolina all the way to Maine with an Expedition and had no trouble. It can tow up to 10,000 lbs. depending on what gears you have. What kind of gas milage are you guys getting towing and non towing. How does this truck ride compared to a 3/4 ton or 1 ton.

TOWING
I just purchased a 2002 2500HD and am towing a 26 foot Donzi that weighs over 6,000 lbs loaded not including trailer.
The trucks (2500 vs 1500) are almost the same other than an extra leaf spring and cranked up torsion bar I believe. I have the same tranny and the 6.0L that you have. My 2500 does just fine towing this package other than it shifts down into third going around 70 on inclines. I know I'm not supposed to tow in OD anyway so I guess that is no big deal.
Love the truck!

hey kirk,
i'm down sizing from a 2000 1 ton 4x4 crew cab long bed w/ the 454. so i know it won't tow as well, but the ride will be better.
i got the 3.73 gears. wish it had the 4.10. oh well.
i don't understand how chevy is doing things now. the 1500 hd is a 3/4 ton the 2500hd is a 1 ton. i really like having the crew cab in a little bit smaller package. maybe i'll go for a tow tonight to see what i think.

Dredgeking, I went from a 1997 1 ton 4x4 duelly ext cab with a 454 to a new Tahoe, I wasn't planning on getting a new boat just yet, Anyways I don't think there is any way I should tow my boat with the Tahoe. I'd appreciate any info you could give me on your truck. Thanks

Hey Kirk,
Not great - about 12-14 hwy with avg around 11 city. Truck only has 2500 miles on it so maybe it will get better.
A great resource to help you make the decision is right here on the board. I believe his screen name is "bsag" if I'm not mistaken. He is a manager at a large east coast dealer, well informed and very helpful. Kinda talked me into going with the 6.0L vs. diesel for my use.
Good luck on your purchase - give him a shout if you can get him.
