Upgrade to 36 cat with 700
I know its been asked and argued a million times but Im fighting myself on this .... I have a 28 cat with 496s in it and ive never had a major issue.( except heat exchangers) I want to upgrade to a 36 nor-tech with 700... My only issue is the upkeep on the motors? I work on cars all week and I dont want to do it on the weekends too.. I know you should do valve adj every 100 hrs and such but rebuilds? How long do they last? Also the nxt drives are they OK or do they run the risk of breaking compared to 6 drives.. And then we have the problem of insurance.. I know its alot of questions but I dont know if its worth it to stay where im at or take it to the next level and see how it shakes out... Any answers would be appreciated . Thanks Frank

We have a pair of 700's although not in a cat, they have been trouble free for 120 hrs. No need to adj. valves Hyd. roller lifters, and from all indications they should go 300-400 hrs before major service is required. The NXT drives I cant speak to we are running the NXT trans, and gimbal with #6 lowers. Again no problems. As far as the 36/700 combinations their are several running around, Im sure someone will lend their experience on that, or call Terry Sobo at Nor-Tech, he will answer every question you have about the boat. Yep..insurance will probably go up, but its the price you pay to play at that level. Since you already have a cat, that helps to ease the inital shock of insuring a cat. Give this person a call or email. She will help you with a quote

Merc 700's and NXT's are a great turnkey package! You will not have a problem with that package as long as you do the proper maintenance like anything. Great set up!

We have lots of experience with the 700/NXT packages and do the drive rebuilds in-house. So on the maintenance end, I can give you insight good AND bad. Great product: Just not perfect. Lots of 36 Nor-tech experience too.

Stick with the Nor-Tech your first choice is the best one in my opinion...but I might be a little biased... I can't speak towards the 700 / NXT package but if you have cat experience and a good driving record and references insurance shouldn't be too hard to get but it might be a little pricey depending on how long your season is...
I have mine through American Reliable and one of the others who provide this type of insurance is Markel. I heard where there was supposed to be another player in the high performance cat market but don't know who they are... Mine run's approx $6.5K with a 6 mo. lay-up here in the Midwest.
One thing to remember when your insurance shopping you first need to pick a good agent who handles multiple lines and has experience with high performance Cat's.
Cat Insurance is like Commercial Insurance where you have an "Agent of Record". Once you've had someone give you a quote no one else can get competing quotes from the same carriers... There are quite a few good agents here on OSO that should be able to help you out.
Good Luck.....Jim

I have the exact set up you are looking at. I have been trouble free for 100 hours (all poker runs). Feel free to call me at (518) 796-3325 with any questions. My boat is for sale.
