496ho Vs 525 Mercruiser?

Hey guys
Im a first time poster and long time watcher of this website from Australia.
Just a quick question. I am a marine mechanic by trade in australia however much of my time was spent on high performance engines in the water ski racing area over here (mostly twin turbo set ups). I havent worked as a marine mechanic for over 6 years and in my time i never really touched standard mercruisers (kinda putting the cart before the horse i know however thats how it was.), anyway i was wondering what most you guys thought about the 496HO compared to a 525 as a general comparison in a 21' ski boat (weighing approx 900lb hull only)?
Now i know most will say more cubes is better and how can you compare however i am talking dollar for dollar in initial cost and then maintenance intervals and cost, rebuild cost, general pro's and cons etc including speed differences and drive choices. Also suitability as a social cruising engine.
Any input would be appreciated
Kurt

I put over 600 trouble free hours on a 496, not sure you can do that with a 525. I don't think the extra money would be worth it in a 21 ski boat.
