So sad! At any age it is sad, but 16 is aweful.
The parents have to live with this (I agree very stupid) decision for the rest of their lives so no need to lambaste them.

Let's hope for a miracle.

A. Her brother already did it at 17
B. She had more experience than her brother
C. At 16 she can drive a car, get married in some states and certainly get pregnant

I wouldn't let my daughters do it but remember this is AMERICA and FREEDOM IS WHAT WE FIGHT FOR!

It sounds to me like they didn't have an adequate support system. They should have had been prepared to scooper her up onto a support boat in a moments notice.

I hope that if her boat went down she had time to get the raft off and into her survival suit. If she did then likely she will be OK. If not......

Was it correct for her to be out there? Who knows. I know kids that are younge that could out sail much other people. I know a kid that is 6 that can run an excavator better then most people can. Age is not the determining factor in when is the correct time to try something like this. It is a shame if some one dies at any age.

true responsibilty comes at different ages, however in the eyes of the law, a child and their safety is the parents responsibility untill age 18 unless emancipated. 30 knots of air on a sailboat is honkin but its not nuking. A double reef in the main and a number 4 jib and she should have been well within the limits of control, though that is speaking arbitrarily as I dont know the exact conditions, but I have sailed in 30 knots of air many times.
