Need TRS LH Lower or complete drive fast.

I pulled the lower off my LH drive to remove a stubborn drain plug and noticed a 4" long crack at the rear of the torpedo. Opening day is May 4 up here. I am going to try to epoxy it for the weekend. Just hope it doesn't explode and relieve me of my propshaft and prop. Any help with used or rebuilt parts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Exoxy will do you no good. Take it to a really good welder and have them weld it up for you. If he knows what he is doing you will be fine. Make sure he v-grooves out the crack and gets it good and clean and you will be as good as new. Then you can buy your time to find a good deal. There are a lot of them on this site for sale.

I know that's the right thing to do Jon, I just don't think I have the time. I have to have my boat in the water in the next 3 days to be able to make it and I've still got other things to do. How much stress is on the rear of the torpedo? The epoxy I have is Belzona molecular and has sealed cracked engine blocks before. Very expensive and very good epoxy. The only good aluminum welder I know works swingshift so I can't see him till the weekend.

Jim there is a lot of stress back there. The problem is that they epoxy is not make to hold it together like that. I know it is not what you want to hear. If you get just the lower remember that you have to shim the lower to the upper with the TRS drives. So if you can get a complete unit.

Jon,
I thought about it after your post, and when the brain fart had finally cleared the air, I realized that there is a prop mounted to that end of that prop shaft while under way. (it's never had the props on since i've owned it). I agree with your take on the epoxy now and just got back from a friends shop. He doesn't weld aluminum much but did a fairly decent job. At least I'm not worried about losing the prop and shaft now.

I did not know about the shimming but that makes sense since it's got the tapered roller sticking out of the top of the lower. I am looking at a complete unit and a lower right now. Maybe I should forget about the lower. I guess you can never have too many spare TRS parts laying around.:D

Thanks Jon. After I splash the boat I'll call you for some advice on my stereo installation. First things first.
