Rebuilding the 502mags would be a better and more cost option IMO. The 496's are going away and the 502's are back. You should be able to have the 502's R&R'd and rebuilt for around 20k by a reputable builder.

I know you asked for new, but I saw this thread and thought it was a smokin deal.

Nort, yes bobtail is without drive/transom. 496's would have been the closest thing but they are gone. The new 502 is pricey as it has catalytic converters.

New 502 long blocks are available, might make more sense than rebuilds depending on condition of your blocks.

Nort something to think about with the new power would be that it would have closed cooling more then likely. That would be a good thing in a boat that stays in the water all the time.

Marc

I just called you then I remembered I posted this thread. My engine guy was going to rebuild, then we figured it might be a little cheaper to get Merc facotry rebuild long blocks, but he left me a message saying that he can't seem to get a solid answer from Merc about WHEN the 3 long blocks would be available.

Looking for options.

Thanks!

I see they are backordered. I am guessing they don't have any cores to build.

I have a pair of new 496 DTS coming in soon. You would have to install DTS controls to use them.

Oh - I didn't realize that was you!! The pair won't help unless we can find a third one.

Does that boat have the standard pedastal mounts?

Nort, DTS is Digital Throttle & Shift

It means no more throttle and shift cables, everything is fly by wire.
You know, kinda like other stuff...
