Unhappy Deputy Sheriff Dies in Boating Accident

Another story said the other deputy was operating a 19-foot Invader OB.....

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (WUSA) -- A single-boat accident on Lake Anna has left a Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office deputy dead.

Deputy Dean Ridings, 52, who had been on the force since 2004, was killed in the accident that occurred at about 12:40
p.m. Saturday. Deputy Ridings was on marine patrol at the time with Deputy William E. Schroeder, who was operating
    the 19-foot Invader outboard boat.

Sheriff Howard Smith conducted a press conference, Sunday. He says the preliminary findings determined the boat hit a large wake or a series of wakes. That caused the boat to go sideways throwing Deputy Schroeder into the water and causing Deputy Ridings to hit his head on the boat. It was a fatal blow.

Capt. Gill said the boat was in open water and had not overturned. There was no collision, he said.

Deputy Schroeder brought the boat to shore and both deputies were transported to Mary Washington Hospital. Deputy Schroeder was treated and release. Deputy Ridings died at 2 p.m. as a result of his injuries.

Sheriff Smith says, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of its own, and this feeling is compounded because both the deceased deputy's sons currently work for the sheriff's office."

His two sons, 28-year-old Deputy Gordon Ridings and 24-year-old Deputy Nicholas Ridngs.

Capt. Gill said no illegal activity is suspected. The accident is under investigation by the Department Game and Inland
    Fisheries Law Enforcement Division.

Funeral arrangements will be announced Monday.

I'll bet it happened near the 208 Bridge as well. It's the most dangerous place on the Lake.

I love Lake Anna, but every time I go there the whole weekend is riddled with 'close calls'. Lake Anna is only 13 or so miles long, and has two big ponds at the south end, and two fingers which come from the North Anna and South Anna Rivers on the north end of the lake. A few members here use to live on the lake but have since moved on. It's about 90 minutes from Washington DC, and has there are thousands of PWC on the lake.

    RIP Deputy Dean Ridings.
