Faction, that's it.They apparently had a good plan to build a new company around the Baja mold, but got shot down over a dispute with the design. I assume Skater still can build a 399 out of their mold.

Doug Smith, the original owner of Baja, bought Checkmate boats back in 2007. He was trying to turn the company into Baja II. For those not well versed in boat history, Baja and Checkmate were two boat companies within spitting distance of each other in Ohio. Baja ran out of money in the late 80s/early 90s, and had some serious debt issues. Genmar then bought Bajas debt, which basically gave them ownership. They had that for about 5 minutes before Brunswich stepped in and bought the "company" from Genmar. Baja existed under Sea Rays arm in Burnswick (I have been told you would be surprised how many small Sea Rays were made at Bajas plant in Bucyrus) until last year, when they were "sold" (dont ask, very confusing in actual terms) to Fountain.
When Baja was sold, Brunswick went on a boat mold killing spree at Bucyrus and got rid of any models Fountain did not want. That included the Baja-Skater mold. A company was supposed to be started that was to use that mold, but Brunswick said no.

Those pics have been on the forums a few times.
