OT: Pick up truck crashes and the NTSB...

Over the last five years the N.T.S.B. has been covertly funding a project
with U.S. auto makers whereby the auto makers have been installing "black
boxes" in all four wheel drive pick up trucks they have manufactured. This
was to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15
seconds before the crash.

They were surprised in 42 of the 50 states the last words of the drivers in
61.2% of the fatal crashes were, "OH ****!"

Only the states of Arkansas, West Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana,
Alabama, Texas and Tennessee were different, where over 89.3% of the final
words were: "Hold my beer and watch this."

All cars/trucks made from around 1995 on up have a form of 'black box". It's the onboard computer that runs our engines.

I was watching Court TV one day last year and there was a guy on trial for reckless driving and killing a police officer.
This guy was driving a hearse that ran a red light and slamed into a police car killing the officer. His defence was that he blacked out behind the wheel prior to the accident and didn't remember anything.
A representitive from the vehicle manufacturer was called in and he pulled the computer from the hearse. The data recorded was the last 30 +/- seconds prior to the crash. Data showed that he accelerated, trying to run the light, then a heavy application of the brakes, activation of the ABS system and a rapid steering input in an attempt to swerve around the police car, then the impact.
He was found guilty and sent to jail.
