Verado sea temp - making oil
Hi!
I hope you are well.
I have ordered one Verado 350 sci to replace my two Merc 2.5 EFI SS engines. Since the engine is supercharged, there have been some few issues with these engines "making oil" (as other 4 strokes brands also do). Especially running in cooler climate / cold water.
The sea temp in Norway is rather cold in the spring, and since the engine break in period is vital, I wonder what is seen as low temp that may cause the engine to "making oil"?
I rather wait a week or two extra to get the proper engine temp and the rings to sit properly
The common sea temp in April is approx. 5-10 Celcius. In May it increases to approx. 14-16 Celcius.

In cold weather, parts fit looser. Supercharged or not, gas gets past the rings into the oil. If you bring them up to operating temperature and run them hard for a while, the gas will evaporate out of the oil.
Also, it is a good idea to change the oil more frequently.
This is not unique to Verado. It happens with most four strokes in cold climates. I used to have 800SC engines on the Great Lakes -- did the same thing.

Do you think a sea temp of 10 degrees celsius will be enough to get the engine within the operating temp? That is if I run the engine 2/3 - 3/4 full trottle? 3/4 full trottle is the max I can do breaking in the 350 sci.

Sorry to delay getting back to you.
My Verado guru said a good 45 min run at 2/3 to 3/4 at 10 Celsius would be good to evaporate the light ends out of your oil. Still, you should change oil sooner, especially with cool water and break in.

I got a great idea, call mercury. give them the serial number and put it on record and ask them about break in and your concerns with the temp. so there is never any chance of a warranty void issue. also get the confirmation number and full name of merc rep you dealt with.

My Verado guru is the engineer who designed the 350. If you have a concern, call Pete Coen, Service Manager at Merc Racing, and give him your serial numbers. He can add a note to the warrantee data base. Pete can be reached at 920-921-5330.
