Fiat Fpt Diesel 560 Hp 1000+tq

Ahhhh, Navistar 6.9L naturally aspirated diesel about 220hp on the Dyno. That boat would cruise all day at 45mph. Some of the most memoriable days I've ever spent with my wife and I, running along the Fl coast or NJ coast for hours and hours drinking Heineken's and getting burnt to hell. That little boat ran all around Coconut Grove to Saint Pete Beach and tied up behind Melons had some grouper and to the launch ramp behind the Dons where the truck and trailer were left! Not all in one shot but just to prove the engine can do it.
And run wot for hours on end?? hmmmm I'm really liking this diesel thing more and more if that is the case!!

To answer your 300hp question you left out the most important part, the step-up gear box inbetween the engine and drive. You simply can not spin the prop fast enough with the Merc reduction gears in the drives to go faster, the boat will always be slow 60 at best no more ever (my guess).
You need like we did to have Lenco (standard reduction box run backwards) or PatW (better choice) make you a box to go between the two. That is not easy, the box can bolt to bell housing easy and the short input shaft is supported by the drive plate and if extended the pilot bearing in the flywheel. The ouput of the box has to connect to the Merc drive input with a little drive shaft and probably need to run the staggered style carrier bearing and all so the shaft doesn't beat the drive to death.
It's been done but getting costly.
I think the QSD 4.2 is a better choice to try a drive hook-up, get 1.32 gears (or similar), the engine turns 3,800 rpm, 270hp or 320Hp and weight 1014 lbs - that could work again money is getting bigger and bigger for an old boat.
Look for used high ouput 250hp B series and start dreaming there first?

i guess i misunderstood , i thought that a multi speed would give u that extra gear to go faster at a lower rpm .
so i guess the only good thing about them is for around the dock ?.
it just doesn't seem rite . what about with a 3 speed tran's ? i would think that extra gear could make the prop spin faster and create more speed ? just like it would slow down the prop for around the dock .
im new to this deisal stuff so im just trying to learn thank's for all your help .
just so you guy's know im looking to do about 80 mph top end and to be able to cruise at around 60 mph with good fuel consumption .
so let say the 43 nortech had an extra 80 hp per side , how much speed over the 74 mph do u think it will go ?
thank's again

I asked that question many times, cause we were planning on turning them up slightly, like the 440 mechanical Yanmar... Do not know.. I know the lighter 39-40 NT did almost 82 in PB mag..but I do not like that boat compared to the 43...
