Freshwater tank smells bad
 

Is there an additive to put in the freshwater tank to eliminate odors. I heard a little bleach but how much?

Im not yanking your chain on this one. someone told me to put a bit of vodka in it like a 5th for 40 gallons. It worked in our tank and we all were smiling. lol it did work :D :D

i can attest to eth clorox in eth H2O i used to spend 2 months in Belize Every summer and we used to add 10 gallons of clorox to our (several thousand gallon) fresh water tank there every week or two. We use dit mainly for purification, BUT you can drink it and in small amounts it won't warm you. I would add maybe a cup or two to a 40 gallon tank.

Bleach, for sure.

I had a houseboat with a 150 gallon aluminum water tank. The tank was sitting on a clump of resin and it eventually wore a hole in the bottom of the tank. Also happens that the boat was built with no drain holes between hull compartments like it was supposed to have. Instead of the condensation and leakage in the hull making it to the rear compartment where the pump would take it out, the sludge just sat in each compartment (found lots of floor rot and such once the omission was discovered). Anyhoo, the compartment with the aluminum tank has a few inches of nasty hull water in it. Some shower sump runover had also gotten into this compartment and the scum in the water trapped in the compartment had grown wild with skanky stuff. The skankwater intermingled with the freshwater in the tank through the hole. The water had started tasting a bit weird near the end of the season, but nobody thought a lot about it. Winter came, and I disconnected the freshwater pump and blew the lines out with compressed air like usual. I left the tank 1/4 full like usual as well (I decided on my own that 1/4 tank was safe for freezing - might not be proper but have never had trouble in that or any other boat doing that). Spring came and I went to pump out the old water and put in fresh water. EEEWWWW!! NAST came pumping out of the faucets

Drained and pumped several times but water remained stinky and nasty

Ran 5 gal of CLOROX and a quarter tank of water and drive around sloshing it around real good

Pumped it out and refilled it and the water was nice

next day though it was nasty so i figured the tank was bad
pulled up the floor and found the cause but the CLOROX was the answer. AFTER the repair it needed one more dose of clorox which fixed it all up

We have a 1973 RiverQueen houseboat that gets a 1/2 Gallon of uncented Bleach every spring along with 2 or 3 good flushing's afterwards....

I haven't seen one of those in many years.
A neighbor used to sell them out of a local marina.
They can take a beating (literally) and keep on going.

This is the second time I have heard the vodka
system. First time was a few years back in
Grand Haven Michigan. We were slipped next
to some doctors for the weekend. Anyways the fresh
water tanks came into conversation.

They proceded to tell us they add a bottle of vodka
now and then and it keeps things in order. They
said it makes the water taste better too.

This came from a Doctor, no Joke !
