Actually, if you want to get technical, and the DNR does when it comes to shooting around water, the law reads that it is "ILLEGAL" to shoot any gun that fires a single projectile, over a body of water.
Many years ago a friend and I were shooting muscrats that were clogging up our waterway drainage ditches on some farms that we farmed. Someone called the game warden on us, and we were ticketed for shooting a 22 cal rifle over a ditch of water to kill the animal on the other side of the ditch. Could'nt phuckin believe it. A ticket for shooting a single projectile over a ditch !!! I told the officer, "the ditch is only 10 feet wide !!!" Did'nt matter, it was still considered shooting over water with a single projectile firearm.
Sure takes the fun outa shooting a 22. After that we used a shotgun.

i stick my shotgun in it's case and go out on the ILL river all the time......i kill lots of ducks with it to. I know for a fact it is legal... Illinois Department of Recreation runs the blind drawing every year at there building...don't see why it's OK to have a shot gun in a boat in Nov. ....but not July. I have alot of friends that hunt duck on lake Michigan....so just pack a shotgun if ya want a gun on board

heck get this it's made to have aboard

Shotgun is not a problem, as long as you're not shooting lead. The problem comes in when you're firing a "single projectile" out of the gun over water.

You'd be best served to find a good gun club. There's lots of them in the area. Shooting skeet off the back end of a 66' Viking out in the middle of Lake M might be viewed in a different light than shooting a rifle or pistol at apples off a performance boat not far from Chicago. Throw in the possibility of even one can of beer or bottle of booze on board, and you most likely would have some pretty uppity LEO's if they came to check you out. IMHO, it's not worth the risk of losing your shooting rights or spending a ton of money on a lawyer.

Does it depend on State I`m in or is it under Coast Guard rules?
yes you can legally shoot skeet in Michigan as it’s legal to duck hunt in Lake Michigan. However you can be foolish and be near boaters, and must use steel shot.
