Sea Strainers in Great South Bay, NY

OK, I have new Bravo drives installed with the low water pickups and I am exremely nervous about sucking up sand with this set-up. I foolishly did not have through-hull sea strainers installed as I never even thought of having a problem with the Bravos. Now, I don't want to pull the engines out to put in thru-hull strainers.

My mechanic tells me he can plumb in some sea strainers between the drives and the engines, but will have to remove the exhaust hoses on my Sonic 30SS to do it. Can anyone provide me ideas of alternative ways of plumbing the strainers and recommend good sea strainers?
