Shotgun mufflers or actuated ones?

Will Drew Marine shotgun silencers quiet down a boat with 550 horse enough at the dock or should I spring for actuated mufflers....do not want to modify tail pipes for a quick and quiet setup yet would like to cackle when I am away from home...Thoughts?

They knock the bite out of the exhaust and are nice around the docks, but I still failed a noise decibel test. My boat is dry to the tips and it is quite obnoxious. How many engines do you have? I think I have a pair laying around.

it is a single engine boat, I live on the water in Naples Fl..Geriatricville USA, and can already here the howling since everyone around me runs outboards. I more than likely will go with the shotguns but like the idea of be loud and proud with the actuated style mufflers once I am out of my canal.

I live on a canal also, and used a pair of Shotguns on an HP500 Carb engine that had KE headers, (Which BTW are very loud, even when the exhaust is wet) with great success. Just keep an eye on the springs, and they will last a long time, and take the bite out of the bark, but still allow you exhaust to breathe at WOT.

Has anyone come up with a cheaper version of the Gibson's -- at $ 479 ea they seem a litlle expensive for single wall tips.

I had Shotgun Exhaust Tips. I sold them a few years back. I was running them on my cigarette Mistress with N/A 540's that made 700 HP. They worked great. They definately kept the noise down around the docks and looked great. I am not sure of the exact decibel level change having them on, but all in all I think that it made it close......:drink:

Let me look for them, I put Bimba pneumatic cylinders on mine. I had them hooked up to manifold vacuum so when I was idling they would close off the vacuum. You could hook them up to an air pump and solenoid if you wanted to run them so you could control them. I sell them cheap if your interested.

I have 2 pair brand new in the box that have never been installed. E-mail if interested
