DROWNED VICTIM IDENTIFIED
by MARTY SHEVELOVE
Police Monday released the name of the man who they say drowned Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater Channel. Jason Whitney, 20, of Los Alamitos, Calif. apparently lost consciousness and slipped into the water. Police said his body was discovered by a person who dove into the to recover a pair of glasses that had dropped into the shallow water.
Lake Havasu Fire Department medical personnel who responded to the scene were unable to revive Whitney. He was pronounced dead at Havasu Regional Medical Center at 4:30 p.m.
City public information officer Charlie Cassens said reports indicate that Whitney’s sister was the subject of a medical assist call some 75 minutes earlier for convulsions. Cassens said she felt better and refused further assistance. Just a short time later, at about 3:44 p.m., her brother Jason slipped into the water.
Whitney’s death was the only one on the lake during the busy holiday weekend.
Mohave County Sheriff’s spokesman Jarrod Lyman said Monday there were no major boating accidents on the lake Sunday and Monday. The only serious injury was a leg injury suffered Saturday by a boater near Sand Point Marina. He was treated and released.
Havasu Regional Medical Center spokesman Paul Allemeier said there were some minor injuries suffered over the busy weekend, but at 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon there was not one person waiting to be treated in the hospital’s emergency room.
“I spoke with some of our deputies who have been out on the lake and they say there are a lot of OUI (operating under the influence) violations and safety violations. It appears people are playing it safe,” Lyman said.
Lake Havasu City Police arrested 86 young men and women Saturday and early Sunday for underage drinking; the majority of whom were drinking beer at Bridgewater Channel. Another 43 were arrested Thursday and Friday. They are fined between $300 and $500. If the average fine was $400, the city’s coffers were filled with approximately $51,600.
Fourteen women were arrested for exposing their breasts in Bridgewater Channel Saturday and Sunday. They can be fined as much as those arrested for underage drinking.
