Repower costs
 
What should a repower to trade my 454's (40 hours, ~475 HP) for a pair of 600 HP "somethings" cost? I could reuse my MSD's, carbs (850 dp's), exhaust (headers) and accessories. I've taken a quick look at 1-800-runsnew with their 540/600HP motors. Could I stay under $15k trading labor for my old motors? Other "cost effective" suggestions?

Rebuild and Supercharge your 454's. The man to talk to is Tommy
at Chief Engines in Fort Lauderdale. The enignes will make close to 600 Hp and be reliable.:cool: That is what I think is the cheapest route to get more HP!

Problem is my compression is too high for blowers (9.8:1), and pulling them to rebuild etc is logistically a pain as I have no place to keep the boat while it's down, or to pull/install the motors either. I'd need to find a way for "someone" to do a package pull/swap/install over a week or so.

Hey Greg,
The compression issue can be solved when you rebuild your engines and put the correct size piston in it. You mean to tell
me that there isn't any marine facilities in the Baltimore MD area?
I think your pulling my leg:confused:

There are, but not many I let work on my boat. The one where I did like their work was just a little more expensive than the estimate to remove/install a motor (say 4 times).

The boat needed the engines rebuilt when I bought it (the sellers shop spun a bearing when testing the boat bringing it out out storage). I rebuilt the motors, but it was a real pain to get the place I used that time to keep to promises for the schedule to get them pulled and then reinstalled. Also had to pay $1k for storage over the winter while the engines were out.

One of those motors broke a crank in half (forged one even) after only 10 hours running. I built another motor from all new parts (except the old heads and top end). I had to take the boat to a shop to pull the remains of the old motor (I'd stripped it down to just the shortblock) and install the new one. Also pulled the "good" one to check for a rear main drip (that they couldn't solve either). The tab for that remove/install (and picking up the boat as I don't have a trailer) was $4k (it did include fixing a couple small gouges on the hull, but I don't think that was a big part of the total).
