Default Tach lead on Marine DUI distributors kills engine

Just fired up my new motors in the Super Hawaii and when I try to hook up the tach lead to the grey distributor lead in the harness it kills the distributor. Any ideas. I am trying this with the engines running, does this make sense? What other lead would I hook them up to?
