Dan, What length are the running surfaces on the 41 an 44 WITHOUT the bustle? I am curious as I asked in the OL forum with no response. Website says 44SL is 44'4", and the bustle covers a #6, so I'm guessing 40' boat? Still impressive speeds running 110 in a 40' with a cabin on stock 700's.

Hey Hustler did you ever get some more numbers on this boat or test it with the 550HP engines?

Thanks

Also Glad to see diesel boats out there. THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE OF THEM! Seriously. Why are we so behind on this. We are in AMERICA, the so called best country out there and can't figure out how to make a twin engine diesel boat run well!

Was embarrassing enough that Turbos took so long!

Glad to see Hustler and Outerlimits working on Diesel boats. Looking forward to more good news!

Pstorti,

Yes, we have run the boat with the updated 550 motors. The top speed was between the mid to high 80's and gets about 2 miles to the gallon at WOT. We are still tinkering with it because we think we can get a little more out of the boat.

Are you playing with the setup or tinkering with the motors? Are those 550hp motors also Cummins 5.9's or something else? With all the aftermarket products available for the diesel pickups I would think it would be pretty easy to boost those engines up for more top end while still maintaining good cruising speed and economy. 2MPG at WOT is fantastic, I only get 1.6-1.8 depending on the load at WOT but I can get as much as 2.6 in the mid 30's with a light load. Keep us posted, and congrats on a great project.

The 2 mpg at WOT doesn't add up.

550hp x 2 engines x .4 lbs/hp-hr / 7 lbs/gal = 62.9 gal/hr

85 mph / 62.9 gal/hr = 1.35 mpg < 2 mpg

My 44 ft raceboat, with 2 x FPT 560, gets 1,43 mpg at 80 mph and 1,26 at WOT(85-88 mph depending on fuelload).
Never more than 1,65 mpg at any speed. Boat weighs 11000 lbs raceready, 220 gal of fuel, no crew.

I think your constants may be good for theory but off for the real world. my engines (315 hp each, 1.7-1.8 @ 53mph) are supposed to burn 16gph at wot but usually it is closer to 15. The Hustler has a more efficient hull than a regular boat the diesels may normally be installed in and they may not be 100% loaded at top speed. I don't know what they are using to measure the fuel rate maybe there is some error there as well. I have Maretron sensors that measure the supply and return rates along with temperature of the fuel to compensate for volume changes to get very exact numbers, unfortunately the stupid Garmin's only give me to tenths not hundredths, but if it is showing 1.7 to 1.8 I know the real number is closer to 1.75, as it rounds up and down.

This is at just over 3000rpm calculated from water speed and is statute MPG not nautical.
