Filler

OK What do you guys use these days as filler when you blueprint the bottom of a boat? On a 34 ft boat how far forward does everything have to be straight? I have heard that sharpening the transom edge helps and have done it before but what about the edges of the strakes-should they be sharp edges also. Just how much will sharpening these edges help on a 34 ft boat that is doing 77 - 80 mph.

Tinker how large an area and how thick ??

Tinkerer 06-06-2002 11:00 PM

Area from chine to the first strake is almost perfect all the way forward. but about 8 ft forward between the first and second strake there is an area about 2 ft by 2 ft that is about 1/2 inch high ( eyeballing it ) havn't crauled under the boat with a 6 ft straight edge yet. Plan is to jack the boat up and slide the trailer out and install safty blocking and go at it. Fill any low areas and sharpen the transom and the strakes. Will probably start on the areas that are accessable while on the trailer.

Tinker the area between the Keel and the first strake in the rearmost say 1/3 of the boat, how is that for fairness? Also on the “fillers” up to 1/8” or so there good polyester systems such as from Adtech more than that on the bottom, A reinforced filler should be used one with glass fibre ,or a layer of fiberglass. The Puttys are readily available, Are you going to refinish with gel coat? The ˝ “ Both sides ? hope you own a large grinder,And a bunch of paper suits.

Crawled under the boat tonight and found that this boat was built with a rocker about 8 ft forward of the transom. From the keel up to the first strake there are some areas that will need some filling. The maximum depth of fill will be about 1/4 to 3/8. Planed to use what Steve 1 said and then go over it with gellcoat.

Tinker the adtech material is about the best, when it comes to the"fairing and gelcoat work" let us know and we will post some help and tricks of the trade.
Best Regards and happy boating:)

tinker when you get to gel coat use a "wax added" type as apposed to a gel/PVA type. sands much easier.
