Alternator alternative?
I need a new set of alternators for my HP 500's (95 vbelt carbd)
according to mercruiser the part number 8171191 is a 55 amp alt to the tune of 700 bucks.
Is there an alternative to the mercruiser alt.? I have not had a chance to et on the boat and look closely at it.

I bought a hd (90 amp) from cp performance years ago for less than 200$, it was set-up for a v-belt and I converted it to a serpentine, it took some slight mods to make it fit but it works fine, they are a little more exspenive these days but still not bad, Smitty

I bought the 105amp 1 wire and it's worked well. Although I have been chasing my tail trying to figure out a belt slipping problem but I'm 99% sure its a pulley issue.

I bought an alternator for a company called crank & charge on ebay for $110. I have a 496 and Merc wanted $350ish. T hink it is the same alternator the HP500 uses. I have been running the alternator all season, and I have big, big batteries so far so good. Here is a link to the one I bought, they have pretty much every model in their ebay store.
