brought the whole mess to the machine shop, none of it is any good besides the block, so i'm putting a list together to build a pair of 489s

Been there, done that. I'm 2 yrs and who knows how much $$ into restoring the piece of crap the broker in Chicago lied to me about.
Funny thing is, I tell all my friends I'm not that stupid :)
Course they all just smile and nod.

It bites that you have to go through this, but I give you credit for attacking the problem so quickly. I've seen others in a situation like this who don't get on the fix right away due to $$ or just not motivated due to the disappointment\frustration.

Hope you get on the water with your good motors soon. That'll go a long way toward you forgetting this mess and enjoying your boat.

thx for the support guys. the previous owner contacted me and says he knew nothing of any of the issues. w/e the case may be i just advise anyone to think real hard and inspect very well if buying "fresh" motors. If these motors really have 8 hours on them it was not put together in a very clean enviroment. Priced out complete rotating assemblies today, going .030 over on the blocks 6.385 i beam rods 4.25 stroke cast eagle cranks internal balance 9:1 compression forged pistons reusing the 781 oval port heads and weiand stealth intakes looking to make 480 - 500 hp and keep rpm at 5000 or less

Found a soft bulkhead today..... scheduling that in this weekend, so now my last saving grace of thinking I at least had a solid boat is gone. Its not real bad about 8"x10" on the bulkhead in frt of the motors behind the fuel tank
