GPS speedos - are they really better?

I don't have a dedicated GPS speedo... but the GPS speedo on my brand new Garmin GPSs (on various boats) take *FOREVER* to display the actual speed at which I am running -- it is always playing catch-up, and especially under acceleration. It is annoying to the point of being useless. I would say there is a good 5- to 10- second delay.

I've searched the archives and I have read countless threads talking about antenna problems, dead spots, pegged needles, etc.

I just recently was on a boat run with a dedicated gauge using GPS speedo, and the registered speed under acceleration was way slower than the speed we were going.

Does anyone believe that the GPS speedo technology has been perfected such that it will register the actual speed of travel *instantaneously* without a 2-, 3-, 4-, 10-second delay?

On Garmins, there's a "speed filter" feature which averages the speed of your boat over short periods of time for "smoother" speed readings. It's useful if you're sailing, but not for us. Turn that feature OFF and you'll see a huge difference.

You can also configure how often you create a "breadcrumb" on your track which is also how often the display refreshes information like speed. I think by default it's every 100 feet or something like that. Try changing it to 50 or 25 feet. That helps a lot, too.
