weekend engine nasties
 

First time out this year (finally) cruising along about 55, come off plane to go through a lock, alarm starts going off and Im hearing some rattling lifters:rolleyes: :mad: , shut both engines down and pop the hatch, The bottom of the bilge COVERED in oil. Pull dipsticks, starboard full , port , just touching the bottom of the dipstick. Blowers on limp back to marina (not far) on one engine. Get it home, 3 litres of oil to fill it. Ears on, it starts,I have twin smallblocks and oil is pouring out of what appears to be a cover over the spot where the car oil filter would be, it has lines running out of it up to the remote filter up top. Has anyone heard of this? do they crack? come loose?, engine doesnt sound too good either, but it does run........****.............Doug

Sorry to hear you had problems- I have seen 2 different filter adapters for remote filter setups.

On the normal automotive block mounted filter setup, there is an aluminum casting which is bolted onto the filter pad from underneath. This casting has a threaded nipple which the filter screws on to, and also has a filter bypass which bypasses the filter when it is clogged.

on the first type remote filter setup, an adapter screws on like an oil filter. this adapter has the 2 oil line connections to it. I would worry about this coming loose under severe use (boat).

The second type of adapter bolts to the filter pad in place of the factory filter/bypass assembly. It is possible these could come loose.

Another possible oil hose connection point is directly above the filter pad. I don't remember on small blocks, but on the big blocks there are 1 and sometimes 2 threaded holes which are normally plugged, and can be used for oil feed/return

I had a hose coming off the adapter leak. Dumped 4 quarts in the bilge...refilled it...did it again...made it back to a gas dock bought more oil...refilled again. A mile before home ran out again. Limped the rest of the way on port engine (no power steering). That was just about two years ago.And both big blocks are still running fine. Hope you're as lucky. After finding out the engine was ok I was actually glad to clean up the mess in the bilge!!!
