Both my Fountains look like that after a few minutes of running. Have to wash the swim platform off ever time I stop to keep from tracking black soot in the boat. Always chocked it up to the exhaust swirling under the platform.

Could be a couple of blown power valves if it just started doing it. Have the motors backfired recently?

I'll have to wait around longer for the owner to show up next time to get more details . . . The two times that I've seen it, no one has been around.

my stock merc 502's do that all the time
It is actually cleaner, but still some soot, when I used to run 92 ten years ago.
Now I just deal with it.
a $4 bottle of cleaner is cheaper then the price of premium

Looks perfect to me.

It's easier to wash some soot of the transom, than it is to chisel the pistons out of the headers.
