Just trying to get an idea. I have a RayMarine RAY53 with a 4' fiberglass shakepeare onboard.

I have an inexpensive mounted one. I went with the short 3' antenna and mounted it hidden inside the storage wells along each side of the boat. Mostly use it for docking and locking. I left enough cable that if I needed it in a pinch I can pull it out and hold it up higher for better reception.

funny thing, my radio shorted out last season.
bought a new raio unit Friday just in time for watching Smoke on the water. 5 minutes on the water and the dang antennae broke.
