Powerboat racer critically injured in crash
A powerboat racer was flown to a Miami hospital in critical condition after Page Motorsports wrecked*Friday afternoon, race officials confirmed at 4:20 p.m.
Joey Gratton, the throttle man, was conscious and talking, according to a race captain, but was in criticial condition when he was flown to Ryder Trauma Center, according to Larry Bleil, president of the Conch Republic Offshore Powerboat Racing Association.
Gratton is partners with Steve*Page, the owner/driver, who was not seriously injured in the wreck. He was admitted to Lower Keys Medical Center*in good condition, according*to a*Monroe County Tourist Development Council press release.
Both men*were taken to Coast Guard Sector*Key West, where paramedics were waiting to take them to the*Stock Island hospital.
They rolled the 38-foot, 850-class Skater catamaran super boat twice on*the first turn, tourist council*spokesman Andy Newman said,*leaving*their boat*nose up.
It was the second day of racing in the 31st annual Key West Offshore Championship.
Page, an 18-year veteran from Fort Myers, teamed up with Gratton, of University Park, Fla., in 1999. Both are former motocross racers.
Page Motorsports has won three world championships, eight national championships, the Randy Linebach Lighthouse Award and was inducted into the American Power Boat Association’s Hall of Champions, according to pagemotorsports.com.
The crash came two days after Big Thunder owners Bob Morgan, the throttle man, and Jeff Tillman, the driver, both of Missouri, were killed when their boat caught air and flipped.
