After 15 years and a series of upgrades, our boating tastes and preferences are starting to change. Since this is such a unique boat, it's hard to know how to price it. For sure, it needs to go to an owner that understands the compromises that accompany the benefits of owning a boat like this. It's fast, it's economical (3.3 mph @ 55 mph), and it's reliable, but it requires attention at high speeds and around the dock.

The basics:

1. Hull built in Norway in October 1994 at Batbygarrna (raceboat yard) fully-cored with Divinycel (including the bottom and interior liner), 40% Kevlar and vacuum-bagged. "One of the best-built hulls I've ever seen." - Bobby Moore
2. This is the ONLY lightweight pleasure hull (1800 lbs bare) in the US. All the other 28's are US or Canadian built, and most likely solid layup and not vacuum bagged.
3. Rigged by Bobby Moore in 1997; re-rigged and re-powered with an Ilmor MV-10 725/Ilmor package by Penske Racing personnel (me and others) in 2010. The entire re-rigging process is fully documented with extensive photos.
4. Paint by GrafikEFX.
5. Best performance to date is 103 mph at 5900 (engine good to 6400). More speed is there with some set-up work.
6. Hering 5-blade prop, Livorsi VantageView gauges, Garmin 740 chartplotter, MarineAir air conditioning in cockpit and cabin, 3 group 31 batteries with 2000 watt inverter, Carbon seats, South Florida trailer with new disc brakes in 2010.
7. Full towing cover, cockpit cover, and roof extension canvas included.
8. 42 hours on the Ilmor package. Extra Mobil One 1w40 and oil filers included.
9. Sony/Canton stereo system.

There are several small projects to be completed before it is back to "this boat needs nothing" condition, so I am willing to negotiate somewhat on price with someone who is comfortable taking those projects on. I am also happy to finish the work myself, given the time.

By my reckoning, the components alone to build this boat come to over $160,000 before any labor is included. I'm thinking of starting at $85,000. Any feedback (or interested buyers)?

You said yourself there are several things that need to be completed before it is a perfect boat..... and the hull is almost 20 years old. I'm thinking 35-45K would be a good start.

The wholesale, bottom dollar blowout price on a 40 hour 725 V-10 with Indy Drive would be pretty much eat up that $45k itself. Hell if he had two of those packages I would think hard about buying both of them. Beyond that, what is the hull itself worth? I have no idea but it's worth something.

Most 20 year old single engine boats would be lucky to get $45,000.
That said, this is FAR from your average 20 year old boat!
Aside from the obvious Ilmor/Indy upgrade, there are very few of these original 28's out there.
Not only is it blisteringly fast, let's talk about how it draws a crowd at the docks and ramps!
To top that off, there are so many one off and custom engineered pieces in that boat, it would make your head spin. Let's not forget who Chuck worked for (or works for .... kind of like the CIA of Indy Cars .... you never really leave :-)). The time, engineering, and hours invested are insane.

Yes, it will take the right kind of buyer but it is a very unique boat.
At less than 1/2 the price of a 29OL you can truly have a one of a kind boat!

Start at $85K, never hurts to ask............ and slowly move on down to $60K. These are truly incredible boats if you've ever seen one in action on the race course.

The projects are small: re-installing the A/C unit, installing cabin and cockpit courtesy/accent lights, a couple of plumbing clean-up jobs and some paint and interior touch-up. Nothing significant; just getting it to perfect/Robb Report status.

A bare hull built to this specification would be over $50,000 (sitting on the dock at the manufacturer in Norway). Hull hours are probably about 500, and it is rock solid. A complete survey was done in June 2011:
"THE VESSEL WAS FOUND TO BE IN OVERALL EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SHOW AS NEW. THIS IS A VERY RARE VESSEL AND THE ENGINE AND DRIVE ARE EXPENSIVE AND NEW. THIS VESSEL HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND IT SHOWS. THIS VESSEL IS CONSTRUCTED OF HIGH TECH MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY AND IS ONE OF THE CLEANEST 1995 BOATS I HAVE SEEN. WITH THESE FACTORS IN MIND I AM APPRAISING THIS MANNERFELT B-28 "TRY ME" AT $100,000.00"
