I grew up close to there and used to work on the fishing boats from this area and Lyttleton harbor on the other coast. As a mechanic, not a fisherman.

Crazy as it sounds, although not every day this type of water isn't too uncommon when the Grey river comes down in flood. And that river floods a lot.

Lost a couple friends on those fishing boats over there. Lost more boats than people though, usually when pulling the net in over the side.
Not sure about nowadays but back then the boys had an inflatable raft on the roof of the wheelhouse that would deploy once the boat sank to a certain depth. The stories go that waiting for that raft to come up when you're bobbing around in the ocean by yourself seems like the longest 10 minutes of your life.

The boys all made great money in a region where money has always been tight. My balls were never big enough to do it.

Didn't look all that bad. The igloo coolers didn't budge. Heck, the lids come off mine just rolling down the dock.
