Joe mentioned the most important factor to consider with a diesel on the first page. PROP SPEED!!!.

I'm making 700+ hp, with 1.26 drive gears and 35 or 37 pitch prop. I'm done in the mid 80's on rev's alone. Would probably run near as fast stock 360hp. Now I'm looking to stuff an overdrive unit in there somewhere to get the prop spinning 3000R's or more. Direct drive it 1:1 if at all possible, use that low end torque..

As far as a 12v or 24v. Once you understand em and have the tools to tune em, it's a no brainer, common [quiet] rail all the way.. Ya might get strange looks toting a laptop in a boat, but you can quickly tune in a cool lope at idle to mess with everyone. And since you can't power brake a boat, VGT or twins in whatever config you prefer. I spool at 1600 with my current non-vgt config, on plane by 1800, and done peaked out the exhaust back pressure by 3400. Go with one big turbo, you'll have to step down in props or never spool enough to plane. Been there done that.

Here is what 1200 diesel ft lbs looks like out of the hole, spooling up a 37 pitch 5-blade.

Cheers

Everybody is going "bigger turbos" "more turbos" "variable geometry turbos" "waste gates". Joe you almost hit it straight on the head. A stock turbo from a 6BTA M3 370hp will get you past the 600hp mark.

I guess" performance build" confused me.

I would love to do this in my boat with a duramax. I personally would go with compounds, when they are stagged right they perform better in every aspect.

Dude the old redneck saying goes "If ain't broke don't fix it" When I get to the point where the stock turbo doesn't keep up any more it's in the scrap pile and I'm looking for a turbo that fits my needs. I'm looking to build usable over the water ponies not grenade ponies like this 6BT

Just keep in mind that your EGT's are gonna go WAY up if you start peaking that turbo out. In a truck your not likely gonna be standing on it for more than a few seconds, so not a big deal. When I purchased my setup, I was told the 1500 EGT gauge was bad, so I replaced it with a 2000F and took this picture on the test ride..

Count to 60 while staring at that picture...

To be fair there was an intake boot leak causing the high temp and low boost shown. Now everything fixed and tuned properly, she only reaches 1550 at WOT in the big tune. Air flow really matters on both ends of the power range in a boat.

Your only at 20 seconds now..

I get that. Keep in mind even a well desighned stock size single can improve your setup and make your motor run better and safer.

That video brings back memories....Did this a few years ago.
